Created in 1850, bergamotes have become the confectionery emblem of the beautiful city of Nancy in the northeastern Lorrraine region. Bergamotes are made with sugar and essence of bergamot, a small yellow citrus fruit whose fragrant scent is also used in Earl Grey tea. These delicate hard candies look like translucent amber.
Confiserie Stanislas is Nancy's most renowned confectioner. It is named after 18th century's King Stanislas who, after losing his kingdom of Poland, was made Duke of Lorraine by his French son-in-law Louis XV.

oil of bergamot has an invigorating smell. The candy is small and flat and deliverts a delicious flavor of bergamot all the way to the end.

Isn't it amazing how an aroma or flavor can trigger memories? Bergamotes are wonderful little delights for your grown-up candy jar. These elegant, exotic-flavored candies would make a great gift for someone who appreciates the out-of-the-ordinary. They're individually wrapped, making them perfect for entertaining. Another thing I love is that they're smooth and flat, so they melt gently on your tongue, not in your cheek.
